It belongs to a group of drugs known as “Statins.” Lowering “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides, and raising “good” cholesterol decreases the risk of heart diseases and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. In addition, eating a proper diet, exercising, losing weight if overweight, and stopping to smoke will help. Simvastatin is an FDA approved drug which works best with a proper diet.
How to take it
Tablet form of the medication is taken by mouth once a day, usually in the evening. Liquid form is taken on an empty stomach, just ensure that you shake the bottle well before use. Measure the amount of medicine in a specially designed spoon or device, do not use household spoon for this as you may not obtain the correct amount of medicine.
Dosage
Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. The usual maximum dose of Simvastatin is 40 mg a day. If your doctor prescribes higher dose, you can ask them about the benefits and risks. Individuals unable to achieve their LDL cholesterol goal should not be treated to 80 mg dose as it may increase their risk of muscle tissue disease, rather they should be placed on alternative LDL lowering treatment.
Precaution and side effects
Do not increase the dose of medication of your own, your condition will not improve any faster, rather your risks of side effects will increase. Avoid drinking grapefruit juice or grapefruit as it may increase the amount of Simvastatin in your blood stream. In rare cases, it can result in kidney problem. See your doctor immediately if you experience muscle pain, unusual tiredness or pass dark colored urine.
