Levaquin is a quinolone antibiotic which is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. The medication belongs to a class of drugs known as quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria by preventing the reproduction and repair of their genetic DNA material. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. Levofloxacin will not work for viral infections such as common cold and flu. The medication is indicated in adults for the treatment of skin structure infection, plaque and post exposure prevention of inhalation anthrax. The drug is frequently used to treat urinary infections and diarrhea caused by E. coli bacteria.

How to take it

The medication is to be taken by mouth, usually once a day. Take plenty of water with each dose to let the kidneys do the processing properly.

Dosage

Read the Medication Guide provided with the Levaquin before you start taking it and also before each refill. For best results, take Levaquin at evenly spaced times. Oral solution should be taken one hour before or two hours after the meals. Tablets are available in 250 mg, 500 mg, 750 mg, Oral solution of Levaquin comes in the strength of 25 mg/mL while injections are available in the strengths of 500 mg/20 ml and 750 mg/30 ml.

Precautions and side effects

Do not use Levaquin if not needed as using any antibiotic when not needed may make it ineffective for future infections. Nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and headache may occur. Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, head injury, kidney problem or arthritis. Stop taking Levaquin and call your doctor immediately if you experience low blood sugar, severe stomach pain, breathing problem, muscle weakness, nervousness and have suicidal thoughts.
