Benzonate is used to treat coughs caused by the common cold and other breathing problems such as pneumonia, bronchitis, emphysema and asthma. This non-narcotic cough medicine works by numbing the throat and lungs, making the cough reflex less active. It numbs the stretch sensors in the lungs that cause cough, thus relieving symptoms for the patient. The drug is used to suppress cough associated with acute and chronic respiratory conditions. The medicine acts directly on the lungs and the breathing passage, and may also act on brain’s cough center. Benzonate is not recommended for long-term use.

How to take it

Swallow Benzonalate tablet as a whole, do not chew, suck or dissolve it in your mouth. If the medication is not swallowed whole it may cause a loss of feeling in your mouth and result in choking or allergic reactions.

Dosage

Benzonate is available as 100mg perles. The medicine is prescribed to be taken 3 times a day in doses of 100 mg. More than 200 mg should not be taken at one time. The maximum dose is 600 mg daily in three divided doses of 200 mg each may be prescribed to control cough. Take each dose with a full glass of water.

Precautions and side effects

Do not use Benzonate if you are allergic to topical numbing medicines such as tetracaine. Never suck or chew a Benzonate capsule as it may make your throat feel numb. Other side effects include hallucinations, chest pain or the feeling like you might pass out. Overdose of Benzonate can be fatal to a child, so the medicine should not be given to a child younger than 10 years without doctor’s advice. If Benzonate is taken accidentally, seek medical attention immediately.
