Benzonate is used to treat coughs caused by the common cold and other breathing problems such as pneumonia, bronchitis, emphysema and asthma. This non-narcotic cough medicine works by numbing the throat and lungs, making the cough reflex less active. It numbs the stretch sensors in the lungs that cause cough, thus relieving symptoms for the patient. The drug is used to suppress cough associated with acute and chronic respiratory conditions. How to take it
