Albuterol HFA Inhaler is used to prevent and treat wheezing and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is also used to prevent asthma brought on by exercise. It is a quick-relief drug and works in the airways by opening the breathing passages and relaxing muscles. Albuterol belongs to a class of drugs known as bronchodilators that relax lung muscles and help in controlling asthma and its symptoms.

How to take it

The medication comes in the form of tablets, nebulizer solution and syrup. Your doctor may prescribe a particular formulation based on your medical condition and need. Follow your doctor’s advice for taking the medication. The medication is to be used by mouth only.


Adults: The usual dose of the nebulizer solution is 2.5 mg two to three times a day as needed. Doses can vary and the doctor may prescribe 5 mg every 4 to 8 hours for quick relief or 2 puffs every 4 to 8 hours that should not exceed 12 puffs every 24 hours. If two inhalations are prescribed, wait for at least one minute between them. Take the dosage as instructed by your physician.

Tablets: 2 mg and 4 mg
Extended release tablets: 4 mg and 8 mg
Nebulizer solution: 0.083%, 0.5%, 1.25 mg/2 mL, 0.63 mg/3 ml
Syrup: 2 mg/5 ml

Precautions and side effects

Do not breathe into the inhaler device. Clean the outside of the mouthpiece with a dry tissue as needed. Ask your doctor ahead of time what you should do if you have increased sputum, wake up at night with trouble breathing or worsening peak flow meter readings. Common side effects of Albuterol include tremors, increased blood pressure, nausea, dry mouth, chills, eye itching, nervousness in children aged 2 to 6, and insomnia in children aged 6 to 12 receiving 4 to 12 mg every 12 hours. Always keep a quick relief inhaler with you and discard the device after you have used it for the number of inhalations marked.
