Escitalopram is used to treat depression, anxiety and major depressive disorders in adults. It belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). Escitalopram works by acting on the chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) of the brain. The drug improves your energy level and feelings of well-being, and reduces nervousness. It helps restore the balance of a certain natural substance (serotonin) in the brain of the people affected by depression and anxiety.

Dosage
Escitalopram comes in tablet forms of 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg strengths while its oral solution comes in 5 mg/ml strength. Adults should be given 10 mg orally once a day which may be increased to 20 mg per day after a week. 10 mg once a day is recommended for the children 12 years and older.
Precautions and side effects
Do not take Escitalopram if you are also taking pimozide or citalopram. Escitalopram, like many other antidepressants can increase the patient’s risk of suicidal thinking and behavior, so it comes with the Food and Drug Administration’s Black Box warning. The risk is higher among the youngsters within the first few weeks of treatment. Don’t stop taking Escitalopram abruptly as you may experience withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, confusion and electric shock like sensation. The patient should be given medical attention in case there are unusual changes in mood, thoughts and behavior.
